Before & After: Ty Drago (Part Two: After)

(5/2/2011)
Ty Drago again.

It’s been nine days since THE UNDERTAKERS: RISE OF THE CORPSES celebrated its launch at Children’s Book World in Haverford, PA – just outside of Philadelphia, on Saturday, April 9th.

The turnout was solid, as were the sales. Most of activities I planned to do went off more or less without a hitch, and everyone seemed to have a good time. A couple of Corpses (don’t call ‘em “zombies”!) even showed up and engaged in a little light reading. You can’t ask for more than that!

All in all, it was an auspicious beginning for what I hope will be a successful series!

But, of course, it’s only the beginning. That why they call it a “launch”!

In the coming weeks and months there will be interviews, school visits, conferences, literary events and, of course, blog tours – just like this one! I’ll be very busy, especially considering I have UNDERTAKERS Book Two to write and a full-time job to consider.

But that’s good, as it keeps me from panicking too much.

I recently told a friend that having a new book come out is a bit like a combination of Christmas and root canal. It’s both exhilarating in a way that’s hard to describe – and terrifying in a way that’s even harder to describe. A writer’s life is often considered solitary, and I suppose it is, but so much of what the modern writer does is also surprisingly – and sometimes frighteningly – public.

We put ourselves out there, dropping our work on the desks of agents and editors and then stepping back into the shadows for the long, patient hoping that truly defines our existence. It takes time, often a lot of time, to find out if you’ve been accepted for publication (Huzzah!) or rejected yet again (Sigh!). And, if it’s the latter, as it usually is, then we must ready ourselves to do it again. And again.

But if it’s the former, as it was with UNDERTAKERS, well then we cheer and celebrate! Then, when we start thinking about, I mean really thinking about it, we get very, very nervous! After all, publishing a story and especially a novel takes “putting yourself out there” to a whole new level.

Now there will be readers, hopefully a lot of them, all reading a work that you’ve poured your heart and soul into. We live today in the most communication rich environment in the history of the world, and so each of these readers is also – by definition -- a critic, either publically on personal blogs or websites like Amazon and Goodreads, or more privately to their friends and family. And since fiction is as subjective an art as there is, the reviews can differ wildly.

Over the years, I’ve been praised and panned, loved and loathed, vindicated and vilified. I’ve also learned how to use alliteration!

Some writers will tell you they don’t read their own reviews. I’m sure that can be wise, or even true, once you’re established. But for those of us who are trying to break into this hyper-competitive, often heartbreakingly fickle industry, I don’t believe it for a second. For myself, I read every review I can get my hands on, because each one is – in my mind’s eye – another weight on the scale. Pro or con. Succeed or fail. Book Two … or no Book Two.

So folks, if you happen to find yourselves in a bookstore looking for a fun adventure story, one that’s aimed at middle grade but can be enjoyed by anyone, I hope you’ll linger on the middle grade shelf dedicated to authors whose last name begins with “D”. Or, if you virtual wandering leads you to a book site that sports an eye-catching, fiery cover featuring the words “THE UNDERTAKERS” and my name at the bottom, I hope you’ll consider clicking the Add to Basket button.

As this is a subjective world, I can’t promise you’ll love it. But I can promise that all my best effort, along with fifty years of hopes and dreams went into it. This book is precious to me, and I’ve done (and will continue to do) everything I can to help it succeed.

But, ultimately dear reader, it’s up to you.

Prepare to do battle with the Greatest Fighting Team of Teenage Girls ever assembled!

Jessica Hoshi is just like any other girl. She loves music, playing in the marching band at school and spending time with her friends. One day, Jessica and her friends visit the Lakeshore Historical Society to take the Tall Ship Tour.

After they get separated from the tour group, Jessica discovers a gem-encrusted Lantern and a magically locked jewelry box below decks in the ship’s hold. A voice from inside the Lantern tells Jessica they are all in great danger. The jewelry box contains priceless stolen artifacts sought by ruthless and evil sorcerers known as Cryptics.

Minutes later, the vessel’s lights flicker to life and the sails fill with an invisible wind. The great ship sails across the lake carrying Jessica and all of her friends through an astral portal to an enchanted land called Aventar.

There, they meet the shadowy arcanist Reina, who tells them they must train at once to become Ajan Warriors. Unless they succeed, the treasures will be lost, and the last hopes of a betrayed people will fade forever.

These are the Adventures of Jessica Hoshi! Her Magical and Mysterious quest to discover the ancient and magnificent legend of the LadyStar begins as she encounters the powerful message of The Dreamspeaker!

Fantasy has always been a hit-or-miss type deal for me. Either I loved the story or I hated it. Really, I’ve never found a middle. I still haven’t found a middle. Why? LadyStar has quickly topped the charts in my “loved it” category.

Chock full of adventure, vivid imagery and fantastic characters, LadyStar: The Dreamspeaker is the type of fantasy book that you just can’t put down once you start reading it. I was hypnotized by the spell that the storyline weaved and stayed securely in its web of magic until I was done, only to sit there for several moments after to bask in the story I had just finished. I may have even drooled a little.

This book did something for me that hasn’t been done in quite some time: it made me feel like a kid again. Not in the way that the story was easy to read with small vocabulary. No, that’s not the case at all. What I mean is that this story literally had me daydreaming, sucked into a world that I could only wish was real. I felt like I was part of the book, part of every single thing that happened… which meant that my heart and emotions were right there with me, being dragged up and down through a maze of emotions that gave a euphoric and almost nostalgic thrill ride that I haven’t been on in some time.

And I wouldn’t be doing this book (or the others) justice if I didn’t mention the website as well. There are many things you can discover just by reading the site, which is full of excerpts, comics and pretty much everything else that will make you nerd out. For a lack of better terms: it’s pretty fabulous.

This book would pretty much be a perfect five for me as far as fantasy goes. Not only is it a great read but it, along with the website, leaves you longing for even more. I cannot wait for more!

1st Annual Anniversary Celebration! {Giveaways & Info}

So, you guys may or may not have read the announcement I made on my Facebook fan page and Twitter account last night. If so, thanks for reading! If not, I'll tell you anyway.

This week, Wednesday in fact, will be mine and Nick's four year wedding anniversary. I'm extremely giddy - as I am every year around this time. This year though, life has been good to us and we've had the opportunity to do many things - one of the main things is actually having money and starting on home improvements to our house. We're buying Nick's house that he grew up in from his parents, so these small steps are slowly turning the house into our own - not just "Nick's childhood house" anymore. It feels more real, I guess you'd say.

This is one of the reasons why I have been so slack on the computer lately. By the time I finish every day, I'm completely exhausted. At the end of the day, I toss myself in bed, I read on my Kindle and pass out. So, my reading has improved but my blog has suffered. I've felt really bad these past few weeks. With the anniversary coming up, I've felt as though I have a new burst of energy. My blog time has changed drastically (which you won't see until later this week because they're scheduled posts - lol) and everything just seems to be falling back into place neatly. I feel like celebrating - so I've decided to celebrate with all of you guys!

Thus, the First Annual Anniversary Celebration was born! What is it, you ask? In a few words: a giveaway spectacular! I'm going back to my fond relationship with numbers. Since Nick and I will be celebrating four years of wedded bliss together, I'll be hosting FOUR giveaways on the blog this week! The first will be later on today!

Below is a description of the giveaways, how to enter and basic rules. All contests will end on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 11:59 EST, so you have until then to throw your name in. Good luck!

The Giveaways
Since anniversaries are all about celebrations of love, each giveaway will transpire with something that I love that has to do with this blog.

Before & After - Since I'm behind on my blog, I'm behind on these posts as well. For that reason, I'll be posting a new B&A feature every day this week. During that time, you will have the chance to comment and enter on a form to enter a book of your choice from ANY author featured not only this week, but since the beginning of 2011!

In My Mailbox Giveaway - One of my favorite things to do is In My Mailbox. It's a way for me to show you guys what I have received either through review requests or purchases, and what kind of reviews you can look forward to in the future. I will post links to all of my IMM posts since the start of this year and you can choose whichever book you'd like!

New This Week! Giveaway - New This Week! are my fun posts that I do sporadically. I like showcasing all of the new books coming out throughout the week so you can see what's available. It's about the same for this one as it was for IMM. I'll post the links, and you can choose your book!

Recommended Reads - This is my favorite giveaway of the bunch! I've read a lot of books this year (over 60 books) and I have enjoyed a good number of them. For this contest, which will occur at the end of this week, I will showcase some of my absolute favorite reads of 2011. They don't necessarily have to be 2011 releases, just books that I've read in 2011. You will get the chance to win your choice out of the showcase!

How to Enter
This will be the easiest part!

Each giveaway will have it's own separate form. You can pick and choose which giveaways you'd like to enter, or enter them all by filling out all of the forms. When it's time for me to choose winners, I'll randomly select one winner out of each giveaway.

The Rules
There has to be some ground rules established for these contests.

(1) You MUST follow my blog! This contest is about giving back to the ones who devote some of their time to visiting and participating on my blog. I won't play favorites with new or old followers, though. You all have the same chances of winning.
(2) A valid E-MAIL ADDRESS is a MUST. I don't post winners on here because most of the time, I'm away with no internet access. However, I do have my trusty Blackberry that's hooked up to my e-mail account. So, it's easy to choose a winner and e-mail them - which is why this is so crucial.
(3) All forms MUST have the required information filled in completely!
(4) All entries MUST be in by 11:59 EST on Sunday, June 5, 2011.
(5) If you receive a notification that you've won, you MUST respond to it within 72 hours of receiving the e-mail. That way, I can order all of the books at the same time.
(6) All of these contests are INTERNATIONAL! Even though you're choosing from books that I have and love dearly, I feel it's only fair that you have your own brand-spanking new copy of the book. All physical books will be ordered from The Book Depository, so if you live where they ship [check here] then you can enter.

Don't forget to keep checking the blog for new updates. You may also follow me on Facebook, Goodreads, or Twitter for giveaway reminders!

Blog Tour Guest Post: Into The Past with Steve Watkins

Today it is my honor to welcome Steve Watkins to Missy's Reads & Reviews as part of the tour for his novel, What Comes After. Steve was asked what books he would recommend to his past self at ages 5, 10, 15 and 20. Below is his answer. Enjoy!

At 5: Doctor Dan the Band-Aid Man, awesome because it had a little pouch inside the back cover with REAL BANDAIDS! Also at 5: every single picture book in our little town library. My mom’s only rule for how many I could check out at one time was that I had to be able to carry them all myself. That’s why I was so buff as a child—because of all that heavy, heavy lifting. I would read in the car until mom made me get out, read lying down on the carport until she made me get up, read on the back porch until she made me come inside, read on my bunk bed until she made me turn out the lights, read under the covers with a flashlight until the battery died.

At 10: Every Hardy Boy mystery and Alfred Hitchcock Presents mystery and Andre Norton fantasy and Chip Hilton sports book and exactly one Nancy Drew mystery, just to see if I could live with the secret shame of reading a girl’s book (I couldn’t; social pressure was just too great….). Best book ever: The Pushcart War by Jean Merrill. And my first grown-up book, The Virginian, which was the first place I ever read actual cussing.

At 15: The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I crawled into that hole and stayed there for a couple of years, with a Led Zeppelin soundtrack to keep me company. Also Love Story. And The Godfather.

At 20: Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five, David Halberstam’s The Best and the Brightest, The Last Best Hope, The Once and Future King, A.S. Neill’s Summerhill, Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, Frederic Nietzsche, Tom Robbins’ Another Roadside Attraction, Shogun, Johnny Got His Gun, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, The Confessions of Nat Turner, Trout Fishing in America, Season of the Witch, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, I could go on but I don’t think you have enough room on your wonderful blog.
